ISO 42001 clauses entering Fortune 500 vendor questionnaires
"ISO 42001 certified, or on a documented roadmap."
That line is now showing up in Fortune 500 vendor questionnaires — sometimes beside the SOC 2 question, sometimes replacing it for anything that touches AI.
A year ago, the first certifiable AI management standard (ISO/IEC 42001) was a curiosity most security teams hadn't read. In 2026 it's becoming a procurement gate — the same arc ISO 27001 and SOC 2 each walked before it. Buyers want proof that the AI in your product is governed, not just shipped.
The part that lowers the panic: 42001 doesn't start from zero.
It's built to sit on top of an existing ISO 27001 management system. The risk assessment, the control framework, the management-review cadence, the internal audit rhythm — much of it carries straight over. You're extending governance to a new domain, not standing up a second program beside the one you already run.
The teams that struggle are the ones who hear "new standard" and treat AI governance as an island, disconnected from the security work they've already paid for.
If your buyers sell into the enterprise, "we're looking into it" won't survive the next questionnaire. A documented roadmap will.
Where are you today — certified, on a roadmap, or fielding the question for the first time?
